ASHLAND, Ky. — Downtown Ashland sidewalks get a boost of color and creativity courtesy of chalk art images created by local artists during the First Friday hosted Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition.
The Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition will take place during First Friday in downtown Ashland on Friday, August 2. Artists will work on the sidewalks of Winchester Avenue beginning at 3 p.m. The community is invited and encouraged to visit downtown Ashland and watch the artists at work.
Artist registration is now open; registration deadline in Friday, July 26. Registration and participation is free. Artists must be 16 years of age or older. Artists must provide their own supplies; all chalk mediums are welcome and must be non-permanent and washable.
Artists will be assigned a 5’ by 5’ foot area of sidewalk to act as their chalk “canvas.” Artists will be allotted four hours to create their work beginning at 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Judging will begin at 7 p.m. and winners will be announced at 8 p.m.
Works will be critiqued and scored by a panel of judges. Winners will be awarded in first, second and third place. In addition, the community may vote for their favorite work and the artist with the most votes will be awarded the People’s Choice Award.
First place prize is a cash award of $200; second place $100; and third place $75. People’s Choice Award is a cash prize of $50.
The Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition is co-hosted by local artist and Brush Therapy Mobile Art Studio owner, Christy Harris.
“This competition is important because we are not only extending a free opportunity to local artists but also encouraging community engagement. It’s also really fun because there’s something about the use of chalk that has a childlike and nostalgic quality. I think a lot of people can relate to the medium,” said Harris.
